Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) provides technical training in microbiology, sterilization, infection control, packaging and storage, and inventory management.
The following must be accomplished in order to obtain Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) status:
- Successfully complete by an approved IAHCSMM course
and
- Pass IAHCSMM Certification Examination with a 70% grade average
and
- Maintain 12 points (subject to audit) and enclose with payment of certification/membership dues.
A minimum of 400 hours “hands on” experience must be documented prior to taking the IAHCSMM Technical Certification exam. These hours must be applied to the specific areas mentioned below and each checked off and initialed by a direct Central Service Supervisor/ Manager. Any previous experience that can be documented by management can count toward the 400 hour requirement.

- Patient Care Equipment (32 hours)
- General Cleaning (32 hours)
- Wrapping Packaging (36 hours)
- Linen Folding (36 hours)
Note: If facility does not have any reusable lined, these 36 hours will be divided in half (18 hours) and added to General Cleaning and Instrument/ Procedure Trays.
- Assemble Instrument / Procedure Trays (60 hours)
- Sterilization (64 hours)
- Storage Clean & Sterile (36 hours)
- Case Carts (32 hours)
Note: If facility does not use case carts, these 32 hours will be divided in half (16 hours) and added to Wrapping/Packaging and Sterilization
- Distribution (32 hours)
Note: If facility does not use this procedure, these 32 hours will be divided in half (16 hours) and added to General Cleaning and Instrument/ Procedure Trays
